He is Vedavit because he knows Vedas and their true inner meanings as they are.

vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham (BG 15.15)
I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.
Maharishi Veda Vyasa composed the four vedas, the Upanishads, the Puranas, but still being dissatisfied with all his works, inspired by his spiritual master – Narada Maharishi, began the task of compiling the Srimad Bhagvatam. Veda Vyasa could write all these as He was the literary incarnation of the Lord. Thus Veda Vyasa also earned the title of Vedavit owing to His authority over all these works. There are several other instances where the Lord has proven that He is the one who imparts such authoritative Knowledge.
Lets chant the Holy Name of the True Knower of the inner meaning of the Vedas and seek to be enlightenend to understand and accept the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna as the authority and try to read, listen and understand about Him as much as one can in this very life.
